Autistic Burnout: Finding the Way Back

Autistic burnout is a profound depletion of physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional resources that doesn’t improve with rest. Meanwhile, recovery is rarely straightforward. It doesn’t follow a clear timeline, and often, the outcome doesn’t look like the life you had before.

Instead, finding the way back involves a deeply personal process of adjustment that requires you to let go of neuronormative ideals and internalised ableism to build a life that genuinely works for you.

In this workshop, Jennifer Kemp, a clinical psychologist and late-diagnosed Autistic ADHDer with lived experience of burnout, will guide you through what recovery really looks like: the wandering path, the missteps, the grief, the recalibration, and the gradual emergence of a new normal.

This workshop is for therapists supporting clients through burnout, navigating it themselves, or both, by offering a grounded, self-compassionate framework for the winding path to recovery.

What You Will Learn

  • What Autistic burnout is, and how to recognise it in your clients and yourself
  • What it’s like to walk a non-linear recovery process, and what gets in the way
  • The immediate priorities when you are stuck in the burnout cycle
  • Why internalised ableism keeps you stuck and how to unwind its control
  • How practical self-compassion and interoceptive awareness can support sustainable recovery

Learning Objectives

On completing this workshop, you will be better able to:

  • Identify Autistic burnout and distinguish it from depression, anxiety, and experiential avoidance
  • Help clients navigate the non-linear nature of burnout recovery and adjust to a new normal
  • Identify the immediate therapeutic priorities for clients in distress
